My 2 ingredient Nutella hot chocolate is made with only Nutella and milk, simply whisk to warm up then pour into a mug or glass and serve. Of course you can add any variety of extra hot chocolate toppings and I give you some suggestions for that later in the post.

My kids love nutella and one of their favourite treats is to make this super simple 2 ingredient nutella hot chocolate. Even better, this recipe is so simple they make it themselves without any help from me.

This easy hot chocolate not only tastes amazing but is also a great way to use up Leftover Nutella, not that I ever have much in the way of leftovers in my kitchen.

This easy Nutella hot chocolate reminds my of holidays with my kids, after a day on the beach we will often come back and whip up a quick pan of this delicious drink, which warms us up nicely as the day starts to cool.

Can you make hot chocolate with Nutella?

Yes, absolutely. This has to be the quickest hot chocolate recipe out there. Just warm up some milk, and whisk the Nutella until it has dissolved through, then serve. It is as simple at that!

Why you'll love this recipe

  • My kids love Nutella and this is the ideal recipe for them to try out on their own.
  • Any recipe containing only 2 ingredients is a winner!
  • Ready in 5 minutes just heat the milk and whisk through the Nutella and you're done.
  • Nutella is gluten free so makes a great hot chocolate options for Coeliacs or anyone following a gluten free diet.

How to make Nutella hot chocolate

A saucepan of milk with a tablespoon of Nutella being added.
A saucepan filled with Nutella hot chocolate and a whisk.
  • Add the milk and Nutella to a saucepan and place over a medium heat.
  • Bring to a simmer and whisk until the Nutella has completely melted into the milk and the milk has warmed through.
  • Pour into a mug and add any additional toppings. Serve immediately.

Recipe ingredients & substitutions

Nutella hot chocolate recipe ingredients.
  • Nutella - I have used a jar of Nutella but you can use any other variety of chocolate and hazelnut spread in exactly the same way.
  • Milk - I have used semi skimmed milk as that is what I tend to have in my fridge. However, you can use either whole or skimmed milk if you prefer.

Recipe variations

For a more intense depth of chocolate flavour I like to add a teaspoon of cocoa powder to the mix. The dark cocoa adds great flavour and balances out the sweetness for me.

Optional toppings for hot chocolate

I like hot chocolate as it is, but for other's it's all about the toppings. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • whipped cream - my kids prefer canned cream
  • mini marshmallows
  • grate over some dark or milk chocolate
  • sprinkle over cocoa powder or cacao nibs
  • add a drizzle of chocolate sauce
  • chopped hazelnuts
  • sprinkle over ground cinnamon or a grating of nutmeg

What to do with leftover nutella?

Nutella is so much more than a hazelnut and chocolate spread for toast or croissants. This versatile spread can be used in a variety of different ways.

I love Nutella with hot waffles or cinnamon French toast. When it comes to my own kids, the best way to use up leftover Nutella is to make this super simple 2 Ingredient Nutella Mousse.

You can also use it as an ingredients in cakes and cookies. Like these beautiful Nutella Cupcakes, from my friend Cat at Curly's Cooking.

Useful hints and tips

  1. No fancy equipment required just a saucepan and a balloon whisk.
  2. Nutella is gluten free so this is a great hot drink for Coeliacs or anyone following a gluten free diet.
  3. Allergy advice: gluten free and egg free. For comprehensive and detailed allergy advice go to Allergy UK.

Well this is incredibly dangerous. I love all things Nutella and I'm going to have to ration myself on how many of these I have in a week or else it could become an addiction!

Good luck, if you love Nutella (my kids do) it's hard to show restraint.

It's so easy, yes I'd be adding some chopped nuts and a dusting of cinnamon to my hot choc.
