Recipe ingredients & substitutions
- Nutella – I have used a jar of Nutella but you can use any other variety of chocolate and hazelnut spread in exactly the same way.
- Milk – I have used semi skimmed milk as that is what I tend to have in my fridge. However, you can use either whole or skimmed milk if you prefer.
Recipe variations
For a more intense depth of chocolate flavour I like to add a teaspoon of cocoa powder to the mix. The dark cocoa adds great flavour and balances out the sweetness for me.
Optional toppings for hot chocolate
I like hot chocolate as it is, but for other’s it’s all about the toppings. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- whipped cream – my kids prefer canned cream
- mini marshmallows
- grate over some dark or milk chocolate
- sprinkle over cocoa powder or cacao nibs
- add a drizzle of chocolate sauce
- chopped hazelnuts
- sprinkle over ground cinnamon or a grating of nutmeg
What to do with leftover nutella?
Nutella is so much more than a hazelnut and chocolate spread for toast or croissants. This versatile spread can be used in a variety of different ways.
I love Nutella with hot waffles or cinnamon French toast. When it comes to my own kids, the best way to use up leftover Nutella is to make this super simple 2 Ingredient Nutella Mousse.
You can also use it as an ingredients in cakes and cookies. Like these beautiful Nutella Cupcakes, from my friend Cat at Curly’s Cooking.

Well this is incredibly dangerous. I love all things Nutella and I'm going to have to ration myself on how many of these I have in a week or else it could become an addiction!
