We started off this week with a trip to Aberdeen after an invite from Thaikhun at Union Square. They had asked us to come along to a preview night for cookery classes they are planning to launch in the very near future. We both love Thai cuisine and headed off eager to pick up something new. We were met by Rebecca, Events & Marketing Manager for Thaikhun, who showed us through to the back of the restaurant where the class was going to take place. Everything was set up for us and we were introduced to Uma, one of the Thai chefs who will be running the course. Uma was born and brought up in Thailand and has spent many years working in restuarants both in Thailand and here in the UK.
Rebecca is very easygoing and happily chatted with us about the company, their ideas for the classes and most importantly the food! Uma answered all our questions and shared ingredient ideas, from her preferred brand of chilli sauce to sharing the recipe for her pad Thai sauce that she makes up and uses in the class. On the night we cooked Tom Yum soup and Chicken Pad Thai, two of our personal favourites and very simple to pull together once you know how. None of the dishes were too fiery and therefore suitable for all palettes. However we both love chilli heat and Uma showed us how we could add extra heat to each dish. What was impressive was the freshness of the ingredients, a reminder that you really don’t need shop bought pastes for everything. All the food was cooked in a wok and we sat down after each session to eat what we had cooked.
Although the class took place at the back of the restuarant and you were cooking in full view of the diners, it was not at all offputting, if anything it added to the relaxed vibe of the class. We would highly recommend the class to anyone who is new to Thai cooking, or loves it already but doesn’t quite know where to start cooking it at home. The classes can be enjoyed individually or if a group of 5-6 friends got together and booked it would make a fun night out.
