When we first considered setting up our blog we had an idea in our heads of what a day blogging might be. We set aside 2 days a week, envisaging creative talks about food, eating lovely food, trying new foods and perhaps a bit of writing and photography thrown in.
Now I’ll concede that on occasion we do eat a really good lunch. However, the reality is far removed from what we might have originally thought. Cooking and experimenting with a new recipe is best done separate from the photo itself, you can’t concentrate on taste if you’re worrying about running out of time for the photography. Also food photographs best cold you don’t want steam or heat of any kind clouding your photo’s. By the time we are done with the photos the food is way past its best to eat. We also look like we set up some lovely tables, again the food is often staged and styled on the floor of the kitchen – for good photos its all about the light. Don’t get me started on some of the positions we have to get ourselves into to take the photo, lying on the floor, standing on chairs to achieve height, standing over each other with various light filters. Sadly, Michelle would not allow me to photograph her on the floor!
Administration is a necessary evil for most of us, but we were perhaps both more than surprised at the amount we have to do – planning spreadsheets, recipe audits, who’d have thought? That said we both love what we do, and thought that sharing a couple of photos of our reality might be fun!0
